Synth Repair Tech

About the role

We’re looking for a passionate synth tech to join our small but mighty team. In this part-time role, you’ll be trained to solve a wide range of problems with some of the best known and most loved gear from both yesterday and today, including almost every: Roland, Moog, Oberheim, electromechanical Rhodes and Wurlitzer pianos, and 60’s organs (Farfisa/Vox). You’ll learn from the top techs in the industry and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for these unique instruments that inspire so many musicians today.

This job description includes a wide variety of skills that are necessary for rooting out and solving problems in our line of work.

But don’t let a lack of experience stop you from applying.

Learning is a constant in the shop, no matter if you’ve got 10 years or 2 years experience, and we all do our best to learn together, share knowledge, and train each other on what we don’t know. You'll be trained to understand how to best address a problem, and learn the tips and tricks needed for each individual instrument.

This is a part-time role based in Toronto, Ontario.

What you'll do

  • Use specialized test equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, function generators
  • Spend too much time with isopropyl and Q-tips just cleaning things
  • Keep yourself, others, and your units safe by respecting the technology and your coworkers’ knowledge
  • Work at odd angles soldering/probing
  • Work on all but not limited to: Juno 106s (lots of them), Minimoogs, Space Echoes, Rhodes, PolySixes, 808s, DX7s, Emulator IIs… the list goes on

What you'll need

You must have a strong interest in music, electronics, and technology (analogue and digital). Ideally, you have a background in electronics and technology (analogue and digital), logic gates, microprocessors (Z80 era), and have some understanding of DSP.

Other areas you’ll need some experience include:

  • Understanding of basic synthesizer functions
  • Understanding of test equipment
  • Ability to lift more than 30lbs comfortably
  • You must know how to solder
  • Good common sense and the ability to navigate service/user manuals
  • Bonus points for degrees or diplomas in electronics
  • Standard electronics safety with respect to probing and measuring live circuits and observing electrostatic precautions
  • Reading and understanding schematics, block diagrams, and testing procedures

Who you are

  • You love taking things apart and putting them back together (properly)
  • You love the sounds of old organs and synthesizers, or have an interest in guitar pedals or modular synths (if you don’t know how something should sound, you can’t fix it)
  • You think about a problem from all sides and consider yourself a "troubleshooter"
  • You respect the technology, the instruments, and the knowledge of your coworkers
  • You enjoy figuring out a problem on your own but aren’t afraid to ask for help

What to expect

We're accepting applications throughout September 2024 and will be looking to fill the role in October. We will respond to every application submitted, so please do not call the shop to inquire about your status.
