Synth Repair Tech

About the role

We’re looking for a passionate synth tech to join our small but mighty team. In this part-time role, you’ll be trained to solve a wide range of problems with some of the best known and most loved gear from both yesterday and today, including almost every: Roland, Moog, Oberheim, electromechanical Rhodes and Wurlitzer pianos, and 60’s organs (Farfisa/Vox). You’ll learn from the top techs in the industry and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for these unique instruments that inspire so many musicians today. 

This job description includes a wide variety of skills that are necessary for rooting out and solving problems in our line of work.

Learning is a constant in the shop, no matter if you’ve got 10 years or 2 years experience, and we all do our best to learn together, share knowledge, and train each other on what we don’t know. You should come equipped with a natural sense of how to solve problems, but you'll also be trained to understand how to best address a problem, and learn the tips and tricks needed for each individual instrument.

This is a part-time role based in Toronto, Ontario. 

What you'll do

  • Use specialized test equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, function generators
  • Spend too much time with isopropyl and Q-tips just cleaning things
  • Keep yourself, others, and your units safe by respecting the technology and your coworkers’ knowledge
  • Work at odd angles soldering/probing
  • Work on all but not limited to: Juno 106s (lots of them), Minimoogs, Space Echoes, Rhodes, PolySixes, 808s, DX7s, Emulator IIs… the list goes on
  • Provide detailed notes and commentary on repairs as they happen and communicate with the shop manager on your progress

What you'll need

You have a strong interest in music, electronics, and technology (analogue and digital). Ideally, you have a background in electronics and technology (analogue and digital), logic, microprocessors (Z80 era), and have some understanding of DSP.

You know you'll be successful in this work because you:

  • Can play keys (show us your chromatic scale!)
  • Understand basic synthesizer functions
  • Understand test equipment 
  • Can lift more than 30lbs comfortably
  • Know how to solder
  • Have good common sense and the can navigate service/user manuals
  • Employ standard electronics safety with respect to probing and measuring live circuits and observing electrostatic precautions
  • Read and understand schematics, block diagrams, and testing procedures
  • (Might) have a degree or diploma in electronics

Who you are

  • You love taking things apart and putting them back together (properly)
  • You love the sounds of old organs and synthesizers, or have an interest in modular synths (if you don’t know how something should sound, you can’t fix it)
  • You think about a problem from all sides and consider yourself a "troubleshooter"
  • You respect the technology, the instruments, and the knowledge of your coworkers
  • You enjoy figuring out a problem on your own but aren’t afraid to ask for help
